A theme that could go with the novel Once by Morris Gleitzman is “Your imagination can lead to great things.” Meaning that using your imagination is a positive thing but if you use it too much it could lead to negative things. In the novel Felix uses his imagination to help save himself and his friends. He mostly uses his imagination to tell stories but he did it when the orphanage bullies picked on his friends and a couple of times for when Zelda and him came across Nazi soldiers. “There once was this magical carrot. It would bring joy and good luck to the person who got it”(128). This and other stories got the bullies and soldiers distracted.
Another theme is “Don’t always believe in the things you hear about people.” This stands for don’t think to good about people through the first things that you hear about them until you hear more and see them. Felix always thought that Hitler was a great leader because he always listened to what people told him and what his imagination told him too. “No, Hitler must of sent people up to the orphanage to burn these books because we have to many”(33). The people that Hitler sent up were there to burn Jewish books not to get rid of books and lower the inventory.
