Major Characters...
In the novel Once, Felix Salinger is the main character and also the narrator. He is Jewish and is ten years old and lives in an orphanage in Poland up in the mountains. Felix likes to use his imagination a lot throughout the story and keeps a notebook with him filled with stories he has came up with over the years. At the orphanage his best friend is Dodie, who Felix protects along with many other kids from the orphanage bullies. "We can't leave Jankiel at the mercy of the torture squad. Marek and the others have been after him since the day he arrived" (13). This shows how caring Felix is to the others in the orphanage. Also in the beginning Felix was very confused about why Adolf Hitler was doing all of this stuff and thought it was for the good.
Another important character in Once is Zelda. Ever since Felix saved her from the burning house, she has always been there with him. She is funny and always wants to hear one of Felix's stories. She believes that Felix is telling the truth about her parents and that they are still alive and in the city with the other Jewish people. She always says "Don't you know anything?" a lot to Felix when he doesn't understand things. This is funny because Felix is kinda lost and doesn't understand what's going on until halfway through the novel.
Lastly a major character in Once is Barney. He is keeping other Jewish children so they don't die in concentration camps. He keeps the children in a cellar and takes care of Felix and Zelda for a while in the story. If it wasn’t for Barney, Felix and Zelda would of ended up in a concentration camp. Barney is an old man with a beard and is very caring and strong. “ Barney is out getting food and locks the door from the outside so we can’t get out” (106). This proves why Barney is caring because he is willing to give up his life for kids he doesn’t know.
